I promised film. I checked Frau Grace’s camera. No luck. But one of our friends may have a copy. I’ll see if I can get it. Tomorrow I do my Christmas cards, and maybe on Wednesday I can go shopping. I drew my Christmas card this morning. If I remember I’ll post it Christmas Eve.
You probably know that I love the whole concept of Santa Claus. And I grew to love Firpo, his head elf, as well. I don’t know, but when I named Firpo, maybe Luis Angel Firpo was in the back of my mind. Who was he? Well, you young people don’t know, but he was a great heavyweight boxer from Argentina back in the late teens and twenties. His fight with Jack Dempsey was, in my opinion the greatest fight in the history of boxing, not withstanding Ali-Foreman or Ali-Frasier. If you don’t know anything about it click here.
When I was a little kid my old man bought a television in September 1947 because he wanted to watch the World Series (of baseball, for you foreigners). At the time our house cost five thousand dollars. The tv cost one thousand one hundred dollars. And we didn’t have a lot of money. And my old man always paid cash. Well my memories back then (I was a little kid) are of these shows: Sid Caesar, Amos ‘n Andy, Pinhead and Foodini, Kukla Fran and Ollie, the Lone Ranger, and The Friday Night Fights. Back then you could see the greatest fighters in the world for free on a nine inch screen. I remember Ezzard Charles, Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fulmer, Carmine Basilio, Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott, and more, all great, great fighters. OK, but I’m rambling. Firpo the Elf wasn’t much of a fighter.
Here’s a Christmas story from five years ago. And Firpo wishes all you children a very merry Christmas!
