Arnold Roth

My dear friend Arnold Roth recently turned 90 years old. Here is his birthday talk. I wish I had been there. Not only is Arnold the best humorous illustrator since he started in the 1950s, he’s also one of the most genuinely funny people I’ve ever known, and I’ve known quite a few. Here’s just one little remembrance. Lynn Johnston (For Better Or Worse) was in New York at a cartoonist event. Her husband was a dentist. They lived in Corbeil in northern Ontario. One of the things her husband did was fly to remote areas to give people dental care when there was none to be had locally. Somebody asked Lynn “What does your husband do?” She answered “He’s a bush dentist”. Arnold explained to her “Here in New York we call them gynecologists.”

Here’s a Bobo Sunday from this day in 2013…

Bobo, my second most favorite cat. My orange cat was the exact opposite, RIP.

Bobo really needs a book all of his own. He’s the most atypical orange tabby ever. All the other cats read his stories and weep in envy.

Did I ever show you the cat that comes around my place on the Chesapeake. I’ll post a photo today.

When you said Arnold Roth, I got confused and thought you meant Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.

But then I remembered him from his New Yorker days. Very artistic cartoons, and subtle humor.

Now Big Daddy? Not so much. These are hot rods and beer cartoons. The West Coast was very different from the East Coast culture.

I remember his artwork. Really cool. There was also “Big Daddy” Garlits, the hot rod developer. From now on I’ll be known as “Big Daddy” Buddy.

Don Garlits was numero uno to us car-crazed kids. When we got older. Big Daddy Buddy took his place.
