How many of you can get this one – Frau G and I like the old movies. We get them mainly on TCM on Hulu. One of the really nice things is there are no commercials. Last night we watched Public Hero Number One from 1935 starring Chester Morris, Jean Arthur and Lionel Barrymore. Lionel played a drunken doctor, and he was great in the role. You might remember Chester as Boston Blackie. I always liked him. It was a gangster movie. The bad guys were the Purple Gang. Here’s the quiz: In what other movie was the Purple Gang? Answer tomorrow, but I’m sure some of you will know it.
Any idea what these tiny mushroom are? They are growing on my potting bench and they are about 5mm tall.
Back in 1989 I had a carpenter do some work on my stairs. His name was Ed something. Frau G called him Ed Nedhead. He was a nice guy, and he looked something like my drawing of him. The most remarkable thing about him was that he could talk exactly like Donald Duck. No matter what I asked him he’d answer like Donald Duck, all the while spraying spit. Very funny.
I had to cheat. It was a solid B title from 1960 about gangsters and bootleggers. I probably ran on TCM in the Robert Osborn days. maybe Eddie Mueller will bring it back. Not the one you are thinking about, obviously.
I remember the Purple Gang from the song “Jailhouse Rock”.
Not just a pretty face!
I believe that was a title for a film comedy from the 60s but the Magic 8 Ball in my mind says, “Ask Me Me Later:.
If it was I never heard of it.

Osborn was terrific. The only reason Ben Mankiewicz has the job is because he’s a producer’s son.
