Frau Grace and I were in Connecticut all last week and then some. We stayed in New Haven, had some great seafood, and did lots of tourist stuff. Frau G’s favorite food is clams. I think she clammed out. Fishing? Fuggetaboutit. I can’t catch a fish to save my life. Fish laugh at me. Clams are different. They can hide, But they can’t run. I’ve dug lots of clams over the years, all over the eastern seaboard. When I was a kid there were clams in Sarasota Bay. I used to dig and sell them. They’re pretty much all gone now. The bay is almost a monoculture. I also dug clams in Connecticut when I was a boy. My cousins lived in Lordship. That’s right on the Long Island Sound just past the Sikorsky Airport outside of Bridgeport. you probably don’t recall, but Sid was from Bridgeport. So was P.T. Barnum. Here’s my cousin’s house, then (1951) and now:

This is where I and my cousins Jeff and Bob went swimming. I couldn’t take it. The water was freezing.

We checked out the Yale Museum of art. I especially liked the impressionist and post impressionist art:

And the early American art. They had a terrific collection of John Trumbull’s work:

If you’re not familiar with John Trumbull, he’s like the Elvis of Connecticut. His name is all over the state. My cousin lived in Trumbull CT for years. She and her sister and the rest of the family lived in that house in Lordship before that. That’s where I spent several summers. Their boys were my age and my second cousins. I mentioned that Lordship is just below Sikorsky Airport. Our friends and almost relative’s grandfather owned the barn where Sikorsky invented his helicopter.

The Peabody museum , also at Yale, is well worth the visit. This gem, or what ever it is, is about two and a half feet high.

They got your dinosaurs…

The horns on these triceratops are about five feet long. I think the one on the right is mainly reconstructed.

But what impressed me most were the cuneiforms. I didn’t realize how intricate they were. This tablet is maybe six inches high. How the heck did they write, let alone, read them?

Both the Yale Museum of Art and the Peabody are free admission.

This is from March 2006

I don’t know why Effie continues to shop there.
