Hey Tom, Yes, there are still us old guys (from the computer ‘senior circuit’) that can fix COBOL “COmmon Business-Oriented Language”; and understand IBM System360/370 configuration, the required JCL (‘Blue Book’ main-frame ‘Job Control Language’) and everything that runs behind/with those systems.
Occasionally, you will still find ‘core code’ with DATE declarations that caused the panic. I’m always amused to walk into the local COSTCO’s back offices and find people working on Green Phosphor screens using the 3720/3725 Controllers 0r emulators (to talk to the ‘glass house’ in their Issaquah HQ). Talk about dating yourself.. yea, I’m old.
Solid systems engineering and great programing, if it’s still in place and used daily. I was lucky to work with some of the best in the industry for most of my career. :{)
When I started grad school in 65 at FSU the computer filled the entire basement of the physics building. Some of the programs I used, the punch cards easily stacked a foot high. Nowadays you get as much computing power on an Apple watch.
Great video Buddy!! How have things around the island been improved to help protect you and your neighbors, if this next hurricane season revisits? You mentioned that some of your neighbors chose to not rebuild (and, I was just wondering if they changed their minds). It’s an astounding place to live. STAY SAFE my friend! Al :{)
Incredible! I’ve never seen anything like that. Of course, we don’t have many of those in the desert here in Arizona. I’m also interested in your neighbors’ choice to not rebuild.
Yikes! That’s scary!! Hope it bypassed you and that you’re safe and well!!
That was WAY cool! Thanks for sharing!
I was working as a network engineer during Y2K. For me, it was a nightmare..

Wow, how cool is that! Also scary. But mostly cool. Hope you and yours are safe and well!
Are you the Karen married to Rod?
