Sunday
James B asked for this Sunday strip from June, 2016. I had drawn it 15 or so years previously, but Frau Grace said it was terrible. Back then she was coloring my Sundays. This one she refused. I colored it. As a matter of fact I colored all of the Sundays for the final 5 or 6 years until I retired after 30 years of drawing Ernie/Piranha Club. The strip was always “Ernie” to me. My editor wanted to change the title to Piranha Club. I most of the rest of the world it remained “Ernie”.

Well Bud, hadn’t seen that one, gave me a real smile 🙂
That was new for me!!
Do yo make any new drawings?
I pretty much only make drawings for greeting cards for my personal friends. As a matter of fact I have to draw one tomorrow for a close friend who just turned 73. Other than that, no. I might if there were a good market for magazine cartoons, but that day is long gone. And another reason I don’t do that is that it doesn’t pay much, and then making up good jokes isn’t easy. I’m not as sharp as I was 40 years ago. And I’m lazy.
I see a lot of Don Martin there!
Don was a personal friend of mine . Wonderful man. He died way too young. The only reason I had a Mad subscription when I was a kid was because of Don.
Thanks, Bud. I really appreciate it! Back when you retired, I wanted to buy the original from you; but you said it was already in the archives somewhere. So, I’ll print this one out and hang it on my office wall right next to my Ernest Hemingway quote: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
He could have been a boyfriend for Effie.
Probably was. She could drive and man over the edge.
As a “Bob”, I fully approve of this cartoon!!
